Online coaching as a sole trader
the UK basics

A short checklist for registering, record keeping and insurance.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Check gov.uk or ask an accountant.

What a sole trader is

You and the business are the same legal person. You keep the profit and you are responsible for the debts.

Register with HMRC

Register for Self Assessment with HMRC. The deadline is 5 October after the tax year you started trading.

Gov.uk also sets a £1,000 trading allowance. Check how it applies to you.

Keep records from day one

Record every payment in and every business cost out. Software, insurance and payment fees all count as costs.

Get insured

Ask an insurer who covers fitness professionals about professional indemnity and public liability. Ask whether online coaching is covered.

Handle client data

Health answers are personal data. Check whether you must pay the ICO data protection fee. Write down where client data is kept.

Set your price with the costs in

The price calculator shows what you need to charge once costs and payment fees are included.

Where Trainersight fits

Trainersight keeps each client record in one place. That helps when you need to show what you did.
