Tracking client progress
without drowning in data

Track four things well before you track twelve badly. Here is the short list and how to read it.

16 October 20265 min read

Most coaches collect more than they read. Pick what changes a decision and ignore the rest.

Four things worth tracking

  • Completed sessions against planned sessions.
  • The load and reps of the main lifts.
  • Effort for each set, as RPE.
  • Pain or injury, reported by the client.

Bodyweight and recovery scores are useful extras. They explain the four above and rarely replace them.

How often to read it

Once a week for trends. Once a day only for the clients who are injured or about to compete.

Reading daily numbers for every client costs hours and produces worry, not decisions.

Numbers that mislead

  • An estimated one rep max moves with the rep range. Compare like with like.
  • Total volume rises when sets get easier. Read it next to effort.
  • A single bad recovery score is noise. Three in a row is a conversation.
  • Bodyweight swings by a kilo or two inside a day. Weigh at the same time each week.

Effort changes the reading

Two clients both squat 120kg for 5. One logs RPE 6 and the other RPE 9. They need different next weeks.

Without effort, a log only tells you what was lifted. With it, you can see what it cost.

A simple weekly routine

  1. List who missed sessions.
  2. List who reported pain.
  3. List whose effort ran above what was written.
  4. Message those clients first.

Trainersight shows that list on its Needs you page, with the reason beside each name.
