Coaching under-18s online
general points

Involve a parent, keep messages open and check your insurer and governing body.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules differ by sport and by organisation, so check yours.

Involve a parent or guardian

Agree the coaching with a parent or guardian. Send the agreement and health questionnaire to them too. Say who gets progress reports.

Check who covers you

Ask your insurer in writing whether coaching under-18s online is covered. Ask your governing body what it expects from coaches who work with children.

Keep messages open

  • Copy a parent into messages, or use a channel a parent can see.
  • Message in sensible hours.
  • Keep messages about training.

Videos and photos

Ask a parent for written permission before you ask for a video. Do not post an under-18 athlete's clip or photo without it.

Take care with weight and food

Do not set weight-loss targets for a young athlete. If you have a concern, speak to the parent. A doctor or registered dietitian can advise.

Know what to do with a concern

Know your governing body's safeguarding process before you start. Write down what you see and who you told.
